A strong thunderstorm went through the area and hit the farm with some hail. The hail did some significant damage to the crops, but we will recover from it.

Lots of bruises on stems and fruit (see next photo) from hailstones. We probably will lose half of our early tomatoes. The plants will recover and we will have a crop, just not as early as we had hoped.

Hail is a real problem to farms and orchards. There’s no way to protect crops against it. We fared better than some. One farmer had all his tomato plants completely stripped of leaves and most of the branches broken. His plants will be set back at least 6 weeks if they survive.

Fortunately, this is only about the second time in 20 years that we’ve had a problem with it, so it doesn’t occur that frequently around here.

Summer storms hit Melbourne in the morning, and they got worse in the afternoon.
For a while there, just after lunch, we couldn’t see the building across the road from us. Checking the Bureau of Meteorology radar showed storms in the deep-red/crimson end of the scale!

- Storm causes flash flooding in Melbourne, AAP, Thursday December 20, 09:08 PM
"Victoria has experienced some intense rainfall over short periods in the past 24 hours, which has caused water damage largely due to overflowing gutters and blocked drains," SES manager for state operations Tim Wiebusch said.

Mr Wiebusch said the SES had responded to more than 850 calls for assistance since last night, with 750 of those coming between 4pm (AEDT) and 6pm today.

The hardest hit areas include the Melbourne suburbs of Waverley (which had 140 separate storm tasks for SES crews), Moorabbin (104 tasks), Chelsea (45 tasks) and Nunawading (37 tasks).

The city of Ballarat, 110km west of Melbourne, recorded 28 tasks.

Torrential rain at Ocean Grove collapsed a bank storeroom roof.

Melbourne’s tallest building, the Eureka Tower, had to close the glass box observation area on the 88th floor because of the fierce winds.

Known as The Edge, the glass cube which extends three metres from the side of the building and can withstand winds of up to 70 km/h, was shut down at the height of the storm.

- Wild weather keeps coming, Matthew Burgess, with Miki Perkins, The Age, December 20, 2007 – 5:27PM
Earlier, two trams were struck by lightning this morning, sparking commuter trouble on several routes across Melbourne.
… The lightning strikes came amid rainfalls of between 10 and 20 millimetres across the state in the last 24 hours, with further thunderstorms expected today.
…
The weather bureau is expecting further thunderstorms throughout the day, with storms now over the Bellarine Peninsula and south-eastern suburbs.

Torrential rain is also predicted to hit drought-ravaged areas of the state on Friday evening and Saturday, with falls of about 50 millimetres forecast in many districts.

Some local areas could see heavy falls of 100 to 150 millimetres.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Richard Carlyon said the humid conditions meant the state was ripe for rainfall.

"With this very significant system approaching tomorrow we’ve got so much moisture in the air available to produce the heavy rain," he said.

"It’s just so humid. If you step outside it’s very sticky – similar to Queensland conditions for this time of year."

Current Affair was at the Cobain memorial, filming people and getting sworn at by lots of people too. I remember Kurt’s aunt was there talking to them. I don’t remember what she looked like so I don’t know if she is in this picture. (I think she’s the one in the red jacket, though.)

Question by Lisa: What is the exact damage of free radical damage at the molecular level?
A free radical is an atom with an unpaired electron in its shell. But is this what free radical damage actually is ?

The free electron has a strong charge that causes it to pair up with one of the electrons of a pair of electrons on the shell of another atom. The extra electron is pushed out and pairs up elsewhere. When the unpaired electron of one atom pairs up with an electron on the shell of another atom, the pull between the two electrons hold or bonds the two atoms together. This type of bonding creates bonds between atoms that ordinarily wouldn’t bond. So is the damage of free radical damage atoms haphazardly being attached to atoms of molecules of structures, and thus changing the structure?

Thanks Much

Best answer:

Answer by Richard
Free radicals tend to be high energy species and therefore have very low specificity for reacting.

Under the correct circumstances, they can also start chain reactions.effecting many molecules.

What do you think? Answer below!
